The above photo was taken on May 3rd 1949, prior to the start of the farewell match for Benfica captain Francisco Ferreira, at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon. This would be Il Grande Torino’s last match. The photograph bears a handwritten description in Portuguese of the event and info on the subsequent tragedy one day later.

Today marked the 63rd anniversary of the Superga Air Disaster which took the lives of all 31 on board including 18 players of Il Grande Torino, Wednesday, May 4, 1949.
