He (co)holds the record for a coach with the most African Cup of Nations championships, three, after leading Ghana to victory in 1963, 1965 and 1982. During the friendly with Fortuna he impressed with his play and soon after would join the club in West Germany. During the 1960-61 season he became the first African to play in German football.
